I don't know how to articulate how much I love Monty Don and his voice, advice, and overall personality。 He has brought thousands to love gardening。 His years of experience flow in this book like a woodland stream。 Clear, steady, and full of wisdom。 it is like curling up in a big fluffy chair next to a fireplace and listening to your favorite uncle give you all the advice he has about gardening that he has accumulated through the years。 I had originally read this, then finding out he actually na I don't know how to articulate how much I love Monty Don and his voice, advice, and overall personality。 He has brought thousands to love gardening。 His years of experience flow in this book like a woodland stream。 Clear, steady, and full of wisdom。 it is like curling up in a big fluffy chair next to a fireplace and listening to your favorite uncle give you all the advice he has about gardening that he has accumulated through the years。 I had originally read this, then finding out he actually narrated his audiobooks I jumped and bought it via audible。 Totally worth it。 Nothing is more gratifying than listening to Monty as you work out in your own garden。a favorite of mine that I often come back to time and time again。 。。。more

I really liked this book。 There is a lot of good advice on gardening and growing about anything from trees, fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers。 The majority of the book focuses on flower and vegetable gardening with plenty of tips for success and solutions for a successful gardening in all seasons。 No matter how experienced you are with gardening, there is something for everyone in this book。I like how positive and encouraging the author writes。 It builds your confidence so that you think I ca I really liked this book。 There is a lot of good advice on gardening and growing about anything from trees, fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers。 The majority of the book focuses on flower and vegetable gardening with plenty of tips for success and solutions for a successful gardening in all seasons。 No matter how experienced you are with gardening, there is something for everyone in this book。I like how positive and encouraging the author writes。 It builds your confidence so that you think I can do this too! Monty Don is like Bob Ross with his painting videos: they both break down the concepts so everyone can have some success right away。Monty Don’s book references his garden in England so his writing applies to that climate, but don’t avoid the book because that。 The secrets to a good garden are the same in England as they are anywhere in the world: healthy plants and an environment they can grow in。 。。。more

I will read anything this man writes。 I have had an enormous crush on Monty Don ever since I first heard his voice。 His ability to look at world with no judgment and an open mind is astounding。

I enjoyed this because it reminded me of the tv show, which I LOVE, but it's not especially useful as a gardening book。 Too general and at least half is about vegetables, which I don't do。 But it's very much in Monty's voice and has some useful nuggets about flowers。 I enjoyed this because it reminded me of the tv show, which I LOVE, but it's not especially useful as a gardening book。 Too general and at least half is about vegetables, which I don't do。 But it's very much in Monty's voice and has some useful nuggets about flowers。 。。。more

A fantastic, very poetic read about the joys of keeping a garden。 This book includes lots of tips, glimpses into Monty’s beautiful garden and a helpful planting and task calendar in the back。 Would recommend!

WOW! I loved this book。 I read this through audiobook and I am glad I did because there are quite a few references to different types of plants-including their Latin names and I think it would have been a bit more slow pace for me personally if I tried to read them。 This book is packed full of knowledge and handy tips that any gardener would be grateful to know, especially a novice but very passionate gardener like myself。 There felt like this book had something for every gardener, even if you w WOW! I'm a big fan of Monty Don, and listened to the audio book read by Monty。 It was a very relaxing listen and I was able to take away a number of useful tips and tricks particularly for managing pests and weeds in my own garden。 As a Canadian, many of the references Monty makes need to translated from British garden seasons to the Canadian context, but many of the plants, pests, weeds, etc。 are applicable to a North American gardener as well。 I assume most of the readers know of Monty Don through I'm a big fan of Monty Don, and listened to the audio book read by Monty。 It was a very relaxing listen and I was able to take away a number of useful tips and tricks particularly for managing pests and weeds in my own garden。 As a Canadian, many of the references Monty makes need to translated from British garden seasons to the Canadian context, but many of the plants, pests, weeds, etc。 are applicable to a North American gardener as well。 I assume most of the readers know of Monty Don through his various TV shows, but if not and you enjoyed the book, I'm certain you would really like some of his shows。 。。。more

Nobody makes the monumental task of beginning to learn about gardening seem as possible as Monty。 Likewise, nobody makes my inevitable failures and missteps seem as forgivable。 This is my third year gardening our 2 acre lot and the first year I don't feel overwhelmed and inept by the enormity of the undertaking and it is fully because of having found Monty Don and Gardener's World。 Nobody makes the monumental task of beginning to learn about gardening seem as possible as Monty。 Likewise, nobody makes my inevitable failures and missteps seem as forgivable。 This is my third year gardening our 2 acre lot and the first year I don't feel overwhelmed and inept by the enormity of the undertaking and it is fully because of having found Monty Don and Gardener's World。 。。。more

Isn't this the perfect description of July:"The garden is ripe and rich like a plum ready to be plucked from the tree。 This is its hour and should be relished, and yet a slight shadow of melancholy is caught in the corner of my eye。 The days start to shrink。 That youthful, irrepressible freshness of June cannot be recreated。 Something infinitely precious has gone and with it - always - the overriding sense of not having paid enough attention, of not having valued each moment with the rapture tha Isn't this the perfect description of July:"The garden is ripe and rich like a plum ready to be plucked from the tree。 This is its hour and should be relished, and yet a slight shadow of melancholy is caught in the corner of my eye。 The days start to shrink。 That youthful, irrepressible freshness of June cannot be recreated。 Something infinitely precious has gone and with it - always - the overriding sense of not having paid enough attention, of not having valued each moment with the rapture that it surely deserved。"It reminds me to stop and appreciate all the different shades of green this week when everything is still so lush and fresh。 。。。more

This is the distilled wit and wisdom of Monty Don from his lifetime of gardening。 My local radio gardening show used to disparage his knowledge when Monty first took on Gardener's World。 But Monty is not classically trained in the art of gardening, he has learned from his experience and talking to others。 Now he is seen as fairly mainstream, but his championing of organic methods and gardening for mental health was not always as fashionable。 The book is split into fairly short and manageable cha This is the distilled wit and wisdom of Monty Don from his lifetime of gardening。 My local radio gardening show used to disparage his knowledge when Monty first took on Gardener's World。 But Monty is not classically trained in the art of gardening, he has learned from his experience and talking to others。 Now he is seen as fairly mainstream, but his championing of organic methods and gardening for mental health was not always as fashionable。 The book is split into fairly short and manageable chapters on various aspects, such as types of gardens and growing your own。 The book finishes with a ramble through each month and how the time of the year reflects Monty's mood comes through。 Monty's instinctive approach shines through and his views are forthright。 I liked the idea that you cannot ever have too much green in the garden, "Green saves the day, the month, the year。 Green endures and sustains in a way that no other colour can begin to match。" Talking about plant names, he says "And remember, nobody knows everything。 Not even Roy Lancaster。" 。。。more

Just love Monty! Down-to-Earth wisdom in a very digestible format。 Would’ve never expected gardening book to be my bedtime reading!

More a book about gardening philosophy than a "how to" - although there is some of that。 It is a lovely, gently written book that reflects the author's love of the world around him, and advice regarding its care and feeding。 I loved it。 More a book about gardening philosophy than a "how to" - although there is some of that。 It is a lovely, gently written book that reflects the author's love of the world around him, and advice regarding its care and feeding。 I loved it。 。。。more

I adore Monty Don and listening to Down to Earth as an audiobook while tackling some large gardening projects this spring has been a joy。 The style is conversational and the tone is encouraging。 It’s not a step-by-step handbook on how to plant but more general guidelines with pearls of wisdom sprinkled in like seeds。 His descriptions of the sights, sounds and feelings of gardening are marvelous。

This book was a joy to listen to。 Even experienced gardeners can learn a trick or two, and the authors “ down to earth” manner is soothing。

Monty Don’s reflections on gardening。 Simply delightful。

I love Monty's prose。 He writes well and you can really hear his 'voice'。 The pictures in my edition were gorgeous。 But it's a confusing format for me, garden books like these。 It's not like they're handbooks or picture books, but they're not easy to read non-fiction narratives either。 And of course it's quite 'coloured' by the gardener writing them。 But it was a great read to bridge late winter and the first episode of Gardeners' World! Great survey of gardening techniques, tasks, and advice, plus a wonderful way to get your Monty Don fix。

3 1/2 stars。 Essays, good general gardening information, slightly less useful if you are not in the same gardening zone as the UK。 Monty Don is a treasure, but I do prefer his more practical tomes to this essay collection。

Such useful advice。 A lot of it was simple but Monty prides himself on offering simple, easy to follow advice based on a lifetime of gardening experience。 Would certainly encourage gardeners of all levels to read this book。 I especially found the "jobs for the weekend" section at the back useful as it's broken down by months。 Such useful advice。 A lot of it was simple but Monty prides himself on offering simple, easy to follow advice based on a lifetime of gardening experience。 Would certainly encourage gardeners of all levels to read this book。 I especially found the "jobs for the weekend" section at the back useful as it's broken down by months。 。。。more

Bloody love Monty don。 I've made 11 pages of notes and will make more as the year goes。 He goes through all the big gardening topics like compost and shit but then goes through month by month and it's just so nice to have someone lay everything out so clearly but also reassuringly。 Like he says gardening is supposed to be peaceful and intuitive and I'm down to clown with that。 Bloody love Monty don。 I've made 11 pages of notes and will make more as the year goes。 He goes through all the big gardening topics like compost and shit but then goes through month by month and it's just so nice to have someone lay everything out so clearly but also reassuringly。 Like he says gardening is supposed to be peaceful and intuitive and I'm down to clown with that。 。。。more

This was a good read full of lots of useful information。It is intended for people who live in a UK environment so if you live in the USA the times of year for planting will be different。 I've always enjoyed watching Gardener's World because of Monty's soft-spoken easy manner, and his influence comes across well in this book which has lots of nice pictures too。Thanks for reading。 This was a good read full of lots of useful information。It is intended for people who live in a UK environment so if you live in the USA the times of year for planting will be different。 I've always enjoyed watching Gardener's World because of Monty's soft-spoken easy manner, and his influence comes across well in this book which has lots of nice pictures too。Thanks for reading。 。。。more

I like Monty Don and I am a fan of his TV programs (my favourite is the Japanese gardens series)。 This is an interesting little book with plenty of garden advice which is delivered in the author’s characteristic simple and conversational style。 3。5 stars rounded down as the growing guides for plant varieties, weather conditions and the included recommendations for cultivation and the garden calendar at the end of the book are related solely to the British climate and therefore of limited use to I like Monty Don and I am a fan of his TV programs (my favourite is the Japanese gardens series)。 This is an interesting little book with plenty of garden advice which is delivered in the author’s characteristic simple and conversational style。 3。5 stars rounded down as the growing guides for plant varieties, weather conditions and the included recommendations for cultivation and the garden calendar at the end of the book are related solely to the British climate and therefore of limited use to us living in the southern hemisphere with warmer and drier zones。 。。。more
